CAAREN Featured in GW Hatchet

March 6, 2017

In a recent GW Hatchet article, the Capital Area Advanced Research and Education Network (CAAREN) was featured for its work with GW researchers and the D.C. smart city community on an ongoing project: Pennsylvania Avenue 2040.

GW Professor J. Houston Miller is working to build sensors that will be placed on campus and along parts of Pennsylvania Avenue to track air pollution and traffic data. In February, eight sensors were installed on the roof of Science and Engineering Hall. These will measure temperature, humidity and air pressure.

The sensors are a part of the Pennsylvania Avenue 2040 project. They will be built into street lights to track air quality, noise and light pollution, as well as current traffic information.

In addition, the street lights will have built-in WiFi available to the public, and to stream the large quantities of data through CAAREN for analysis. Read the full article here
