CIO Honoree

For its 28th annual award program, CIO Magazine recognized the Capital Area Advanced Research and Education Network (CAAREN) as a recipient of the 2015 CIO 100 Award, alongside other projects showcasing the transformative power of IT-business innovation. The annual award program recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT).

Developed by the George Washington University Division of Information Technology, CAAREN is building a high-performance research and education (R&E) infrastructure in the D.C. area to facilitate world-class research. Through a partnership with DC-Net, the District’s government owned and operated fiber optic network and first 100Gbps capable municipal network in the U.S., CAAREN provides R&E services to schools, libraries, hospitals, government institutions and some private-sector organizations.

CAAREN serves as an onramp to the expansive services of Interent2 as a member of the United States Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN). CAAREN’s access to the Internet2 100Gbps fiber optic network allows member institutions to serve their communities with telemedicine, distance learning and other life-changing applications.

Executives from the winning companies will be recognized at The CIO 100 Symposium & Awards Ceremony, to be held Tuesday evening, August 11th, at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
