We can’t wait to see you at the Expo.

The Capital Area Advanced Research and Education Network (CAAREN) joins the Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC) in Washington, DC next week to discuss opportunities for community engaged innovation through collaboration with technology leaders, universities and city governments.

Sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the GCTC Expo provides an opportunity for companies, universities, non-profits, and federal government agencies to share and exhibit their smart city projects and the impacts to their communities. Smart Cities use technology to improve performance in key sectors, such as transportation, energy and health care.

This year, CAAREN, the George Washington University, Georgetown University, Merit Networks, 22 Capital Partners and Scriyb will present an Action Cluster on a CyberCity Education Platform. The platform describes GW”s efforts to create the Capital Area Advanced Cyber Range; an innovative way to train and practice cybersecurity in a real-world environment. As the threat of cyber attacks against government, universities, hospitals, businesses and individuals rise, the best means to prevent unauthorized access is through specialized education and training. The Capital Area Advanced Cyber Range moves beyond the typical classroom instruction to deliver hands-on practicums using immersive and true-to-life city-wide systems and operational practices so learners can gain real world experience and practice defending complex IT systems. The goal of this project is to enable novel approaches to cybersecurity education and training that meets the ever-increasing demands on cities to protect and defend their critical infrastructure and data from unwanted attacks.

The CyberCity Education Platform Action Cluster brings together city, industry and academic institutions from across the region to work together to create customizable city-specific courses and a training practicum that can be configured to mimic a city’s critical systems. GW has partnered with 22 Capital Partners on the Gramercy District, an innovative mixed-use development project whose goal is to create a smart city in a box. The Gramercy District is planned as the first smart city and connected community in the Washington, D.C. metro area. In order to bring the virtual Cyber Range at scale to the Global City Teams Challenge, GW has partnered with Scriyb, a next generation education platform that uses the power of the Internet to scale live classes. Scriyb’s online platform makes it possible to virtually teach thousands of students simultaneously with a single instructor. GW will offer programs and classes at Concept Foundry in Gramercy West slated to open late 2018 as well as virtually via Scriyb. The CyberCity Education Platform Action Cluster connects these smart city developments and platforms – learn more at the Global City Teams Challenge in Washington, DC on August 28-29.
