Learn more about Capital Area Advanced Research and Education Network (CAAREN) and the state-of-the-art technology it provides for the George Washington University.

CAAREN is an initiative designed to build a high-performance research and education infrastructure serving the Washington, D.C., metro region. CAAREN facilitates world-class research, education and knowledge sharing in the nation’s capital. CAAREN offers research network services to research and education (R&E) organizations like schools, libraries, hospitals, government institutions and some private-sector organizations within the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and Maryland. CAAREN has partnered with DC-Net through a program managed by the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer to provide high bandwidth internet access to public and private R&E institutions in the District of Columbia as a part of The United States Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN). In addition, we offer U.S. UCAN sponsorship throughout the D.C. metro region to qualifying R&E institutions, providing access to Internet2’s 100Gbps fiber optic network as well as many added services.

Utilizing the Internet2 Network, and in collaboration with regional R&E networks across the country, U.S. UCAN will enable anchor institutions to serve their communities with telemedicine, distance learning and other life-changing applications. Membership in CAAREN will expand and enhance collaboration opportunities and reduce barriers to implementing new R&E technologies in classrooms across the region, as well as supporting the development of advanced network-based medical and healthcare applications. By combining the strengths of our members, CAAREN will help make the National Capital Region a center of cutting-edge knowledge exchange and rapid growth of advanced global cyber infrastructure R&E capabilities.
