On Tuesday, March 28, 2017, the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) hosted the Smarter DC Summit, which highlighted smart city initiatives across District agencies. Don DuRousseau, Director of Research Technology Services at GW and Alexis Goggans, Progam Analyst at the Department of Energy and Environment gave a presentation on sustainable initiatives in the D.C. metro area.

GW has developed low-cost sensors to provide real-time, neighborhood level monitoring. Used in the Pennsylvania Avenue 2040 project, the sensors can monitor CO, CH4, NO, Ozone, CO2 , temperature and pressure. The data will be transferred through the Capital Area Advanced Research and Education Network to be analyzed.
